“Once you make a decision, the universe conspires to make it happen.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson
The reason I decided to create the DREAM BIG : BELIEVE BIGGER blog was to share stories from the heart and from my own experiences in the hope that those reading would have the courage and confidence to truly Dream Big .. have great ambitions and see them come to reality.
That said, dreaming alone won’t make it happen … we need to plan big too! Since very early in my career, I have had a career development plan and documented not only my career goals but also my life goals. The early years of my HR career was in the Learning & Development space so I spent many years coaching professionals in creating their career development plans in order to for them to focus and realise their ambitions.
My personal view is that our career goals and personal life goals are intrinsically linked to one another and I have always encouraged people to consider both areas when defining a career development plan. It is also a good idea to look at short, mid and long term goals and ambitions so that short term small actions begin to contribute to achieving the bigger long term ambitions and dreams.
I am a firm believer in the power of putting pen to paper and actually documenting a plan, which you commit to periodically reviewing and reflecting on progress. There is something powerful about writing down goals, ambitions and dreams. In fact, I believe that by writing them down and saying them out loud that it goes beyond being a plan into becoming a manifestation that if we repeatedly share is more likely to become a reality. Whether that be because we subconsciously continuously take steps toward reaching the goal or because there is a positive energy that helps on our way and that by putting it out into the universe it will come. Either way, and whatever resonates with you more, just know that designing your plan, writing it down, reviewing it regularly, and talking about it definitely works.

In my early 30’s I set myself a big dream goal of progressing to HR Director by the time I was 40. That was a long term ambition at the time so I set up a series of short and mid-term goals that would help guide me in that direction. Did I know I would achieve it? No, but I did have the belief that if I move forward with my plan and continued to put it out there as a dream that there was a big chance I would get there… and I did! More recently I discovered I have been listed in HR Magazines Most Influential HR Practitioner 2021 which has been an absolute honour. To be invited onto this list you need to receive a peer nomination from someone in the HR Industry and once you have been nominated an esteemed panel looks into your contributions to HR to ascertain whether you are recognised as an influential practitioner. Two years ago, I included on my career development plan that I had a goal of featuring on this list. Arguably this goal was not one I could plan the outcome of due to the nature of the selection process. Even so I wrote it down, with the ambition to achieve it, so the question is – is it all down to planning, or is it down to a mix of planning and putting our dreams out to something bigger in the universe to manifest! Maybe it is a bit of both.
My next big dream is to be mortgage free at 50, so I can step back from corporate life and write a book … watch this space and lets see if it happens.
